π—₯π—˜π—©π—˜π—”π—Ÿπ—˜π——: Most 2023 TVs Won't Get 4x HDMI 2.1 4K 120Hz Ports Despite Pentonic 1000

We explain why Mediatek’s Pentonic 1000 chipset still won’t give you 4x HDMI 2.1 ports that can do 48Gbps FRL signalling, and which TV brands to choose if that is important to you. Should you buy a Samsung, LG, TCL, Hisense, Sony, Philips or Panasonic TV?

Hisense are doing 2 x 2.2 with eARC in a separate port! Why haven't others at least done this???

  2. James Campbell

This ability for marketing BS to obscure what you are buying is why I’m still not comfortable buying into OLED or any of the new technologies.

Who wants to spend thousands of dollars on something when you’re only going to get half the value out of it?

Vincent should review an hdmi 2.1 switch as a short or a complete video. There must be some in the market I am just not sure if they are good….

  4. R. Smith

Two ports for 4K@120Hz and HDR is more than enough. There are almost zero games that use that mode.

  5. asside from hdmi ports, I'd love to see brands step up and add 1gb rj-45 ports, having 100mbs ports on tvs which some cost well over 2k usd seems very cheap to me (considering you can get a complete add in card for a computer for less than 10 usd, and that is the full card)

Asside from that, I'd love to see manufacturers add 1 display port to their TVs so that it makes it easier to use them as large computer monitors, although I suspect this is somewhat of a niche use case

Why can’t Sony just outsource from Samsung or LG at this point because why charge premium price and not deliver

And tvs in 2023 suport dts x and truehd play and out. My pc can my old wd player from 2012 can pass truhd and dts hd on hdmi .1.4 and tvs on2.1 cantπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I own LG and Sony OLEDs, and use e-ARC. This means that the Sony gives me only 1 proper HDMI 2.1 port. However, it's worth remembering that LG webOS is a heap of steaming shite, whereas the Sony Google TV OS is a beautiful thing that just works. If it wasn't for the input lag I would use Sony everywhere and deal with the hassle of plugging in different cables when gaming.

There are hundreds of virtual pinball players that are seeking 42 inch 120hz Oled panels. Many have updated their cabinets to LG 42C2 now and it is beautiful for pinball. I wish there were more of these models available that can fit into standard width pinball cabinet.

  10. Tarnpanzer

I need at least three HDMI 2.1 ports: Xbox, Playstation and PC.

  11. LeDooni

In the mud. Once again only leaving LG and Samsung as an option…

  12. OkraJoe

Now for the real question – how do you get the word "REVEALED" to be in bold in your youtube video title???

  13. Don't care that much about 4 full speed ports as much as I do about ARC being unavailable at the other HDMI ports.

  14. Brian M

They really should require ALL features of HDMI 2.1 to be included if it's called 2.1

  15. Efraim

I have a question that's not related to this video. If most of my movies are 1080p, would they look better on a 4k TV or 1080p, and why?

  16. B127

I would be okay with a TV with two 4K120 ports, if I could use both. Right now, most TV's use one of the 120hz ports for ARC, which is super annoying.

  17. Alex Gonzalez

Oh yes, The issue that I claimed as an issue 2 years ago with Sony and Samsung, is now being brought up as a problem. Even after all the shit that I took that it didn't matter. You should never have to sacrifice a damn thing when you're buying a top tier TV.

  18. SpecialWeek

I would like 3 ports with full bandwidth of 2.1 hdmi.
    One for earc
Two for a Ps5 and pc

  19. Blindfire

I may not have money to buy a nice TV….hell, I don't even have money to eat every day, but this is dumb! I've always hated HDMI (yes I know how to read specs, but imagine explaining to an entire family of people who aren't tech savvy and either have to bother me to give them advice on "will this cable work?" or take a risk after they've bought cables that wouldn't support even 4k 30 HDR….don't ask me how, it was in 2017) was marketed….Instead of just having a simple naming convention (Like gee, idk…separating HDMI 2.0 from 2.1 from 1.4a and so on?), any cable with SOME features of 2.1 can classify themselves as 2.1, even though it may not have enough bandwidth to even pass through Dolby Vision or other features.

  20. trevhib

The question is, are the two full fat 2.1 ports on the new Pentonic going to be capable of 120hz VRR Dolby Vision at full 4.4.4 and 48Gbps. If they can, and they can also shift the EARC to one of the other ports then that will be good enough for all but a handful of folk I suspect.

  21. Lewis Grey

It’s not a huge deal in reality as you can ultimately get HDMI 2.1 switchers that auto switch, I use one with a 2021 Philips OLED between my PC/PS5 and it’s completely seamless. And was only Β£25. That said it is a rather stupid decision no doubt made by a bean counter, it’s just an open goal when comparing to LG’s and Samsungs equipped with 4 x 2.1 ports for the sake of pennies per unit I imagine!

I suppose Mediatek don’t care as they’re selling to the manufacturers, not the consumers and since there doesn’t appear to be any real competition they can get away with it.

  22. Timothy Tasmin

Crazy how my 4 yr old LG B9 has 4 full bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports and new TVs still only have 2

  23. 99tophunter

Vincent, which company sells their TV with only 2 HDMI2.1 ports more expensive than the top of the line 4 HDMI2.1 models from Samsung and LG?

  24. So does this mean Dolby Vision and VRR will still be mutually exclusive on Sony TV’s? I waited for 2023 TV’s specifically for this chipset so I could play XSX in Dolby Vision with VRR.

  25. FollowingStorm0

When will we get DisplayPort 2.1 as a standard on all high end TVs? Getting tired of using HDMI, and it's 2.1 version is way behind what DisplayPort can do.

  26. subatomic2012

I wonder if Im the only one thats going to miss how Vincent says "2022" in his videos now we are into the new year? "2023" just doesnt sound quite as pleasing to the ear somehow 😁

  27. harktz

Don't they know that 1) most people own two consoles and a soundbar? apple tv is also hdmi 2.1? 3) maybe the next nintendo console is also hdmi 2.1? 4) every new piece of equipment to be released in the years to come is most likely hdmi 2.1? Thanks Vincent for the video, we need to spread the word as much as possible. I was waiting to see Sony's tvs but know I couldn't care less, it's either lg or samsung again

  28. DD

    U made "The Verge." Congratulations!

Gotta love how these certification organisations are constantly devaluing their entire existence by constantly putting in this loop holes why something can be marketed under new specification.
They are litteraly self serving entities and only feed lawyers to literally perpetuate false marketing and make scamming retail buyers legal when they protest.
99% don't have time or knowledge to dig up these things and expect things to work as they understand from marketing materials not fine print, deep dives or else…
The same is for USB, SD cards…
    Shameful.

  30. Rashed

Never would have guessed that TCL and Hisense had higher market share than Sony
