How to Record Screen on PC for FREE using OBS

In this step-by-step tutorial, learn how to record your computer screen for free using a free and open-source tool called OBS or Open Broadcaster Software. You can download OBS at http://www.obsproject.com.

The screen recorder is very powerful. Watch the video to learn how to configure and set it up.

INSTALL
To start, we’ll go to http://www.obsproject.com to install the OBS Studio or Open Broadcaster Software Studio software. Then we’ll install the software on my computer.

SOURCES
Once installed, the first thing we’ll do is add sources. We’ll add one for the ‘Display Capture’ — which gives us the desktop. We’ll add another for the ‘Video Capture Device’ — which gives us the webcam. You’ll want to make sure that Video Capture Device appears at the top of the list, which ensures that the video appears on top of the desktop image.

OUTPUT TAB
Next we check the output tab. This shows where the videos files are stored. You can also edit the file type that we store the video as.

AUDIO
Next we check the audio. You can see how you can adjust the audio level for system audio as well as for the mic.

Lastly, we’ll click on recording, show a demo recording in a game, and then play back the file to see how the recording worked.

    Thanks bro….
    you are so nice..
After somany days i can record for free…….

  5. Thanks a lot for this. Great app, great tutorial. May I ask one question? Is there a way to make the very OBS screen NOT VISIBLE during the recording? I mean, it ends up showing up in the beginning of the recording. We can always crop it out on another APP or even using the crop feature of Facebook (for example), but it would be handy to have something like this inside this app. Thanks again.

Hi Kevin, I checked my settings a Trillion times, but my recording picture comes picture by picture. It's not not smooth ist like a dia show. My sound is fine. What can I do?

Nice exercise bike you have there. 😉 Is that a computer monitor or tv attached to it? How do you like it. My wife is looking for one.

The tile is How to Record Screen on PC, but the video doesn't really address this. When the video finally gets to the part where you hit 'record', it only covers recording the OBS screen itself. You never address what is happening with the cascading, infinite loop screens shown on OBS, or how to get rid of then. You also don't address how to record a diffrent screen, such as a spreadsheet. This video was just a big waste of time for me.

thank you so much, i cn finally do gaming ticktocks lol 😅

Thanks for your video tutorial. How do you get the multiple mirrored screens out of the video? I see a bunch of the same screens at one time as your are recording your screen. I know nothing about technology so I do not know if I am asking the right questions. I just want to record my one computer screen on my computer monitor and don't want multiple mirrored screens at the same time. Also how do I crop out the very top edge part of my computer screen just under the google search bar so nobody could see my bookmarks?

I downloaded Bandicam and it worked great, until after the 10 minute mark it said I had to pay. I need something free and easy to make youtube videos with because I'm broke, lol. Is there any other free software that is easy to use and that I can record for more than 10 minutes on with my Windows 10 Computer?

Perfect! Thanks so much for the detailed walkthrough Kevin.

Thank you for your amazing tutorial. I have successfully been using OBS since watching. My laptop died and I purchased a new ASUS Gaming Laptop. I still have it set for Windows 10. I get a black screen when recording. I have followed the tutorials to select the correct graphics option, but still having issues. Should I upgrade to Windows 11 and use one of the other options for screen recording?
