Every year, unboxing and using the newest iPhone is an exciting experience, but after a few weeks, once the hype settles down, you get to really see what the new phone is all about. So this year, I’ve been testing the iPhone 14 Pro Max, with its fancy new Dynamic Island, for the past month. Let’s talk about if the iPhone 14 is a worthy successor or if we’re in another iPhone “S” year.

One gripe I hold with Apple that doesn't need to be said is how orange they tint their displays. With MacBooks it's horrible, but at least with iPhones its only with "true tone" on. I like the idea of true tone, but it's really unnecessarily frustrating when editing photos on the device as I like getting every detail perfect with every photo, so when I adjust warmth and tone after in editing, I hate how the display makes the image look more orange than it actually is.

I love the always on display. Great video and wallpaper. Thanks Jon. I always enjoy your content.

iPhones aren’t made to upgrade annually. They are made to last for years and of course it’s nonsense to buy a new iPhone every year. There is a reason why they are supporting their phones with a new iOS for 5-6 years. Nobody can expect that Apple can pull out significant innovative features every 12 months. Nobody can. Think about an upgrade after 3-4 years, anything earlier doesn’t make sense and is just dumb. Also the iPhone 15 won’t be so different from the 14. It will look different for sure but there won’t be any completely new functions and features compared to the 14 Pro.

Every year I wait for iPhones to wow me and every year I stick with Android. Apple always feels like if they are catching up, to what Androids have always done. And it also feels like they are charging more and more and giving less, like making the battery smaller.

I absolutely love the always on as is. Love it !

After using it for about a month I believe the dynamic island is a welcome feature it’s subtle but appreciated. I had always on for about a week, but feel like I don’t need it and found it a bit distracting so I turned it off as well. Cameras are always good. I am coming from an iPhone X so it’s an upgrade for me for sure and I also went with the iPhone max so a bigger display as well coming from an iPhone X as well.

Perhaps I’m confused. An “always on display” is exactly what Apple have done (as you point out). Android has a notification display maybe? Having a company try something different is the very life blood of this industry. Heck they haven’t changed the look of the phone in forever. I’m glad they took a different approach to something in the product.

Apple did AOD that way because they don’t want to be compared to Android phones. First time ever in an iPhone is the selling point

It’s funny, I feel almost the opposite. Love the AOD for convenience and seeing my wife’s picture all the time. Mixed feelings about the Dynamic Island. The added functionality is really nice, but being lower on the screen, it’s way more of an eyesore and sometimes covers content. It doesn’t “disappear” like the notch did.

I chose the 14 Pro Max as my 1st iPhone ever. I switched from the OnePlus 7 Pro. Both are similar in size, but the 14 Pro Max is definitely heavier.
I'm not on my phone a lot, so I went from 1 day to almost 2 days of use between charges with the Always On Display turned off. I didn't use it on my OnePlus because of battery drain and the same applies on my 14 Pro Max.
I look forward to more third party apps adapting to the D.I. (Dynamic Island).

I upgraded from a 12 PM. Normally, I wait a few years but I'm still happy with upgrading so soon.

  12. Daniel Stehura

I gave my wife a 11 Pro and it’s still good! The small camera lens looks so Small. She gets my 14 Pro in 11 months

  13. Daniel Stehura

The Max is too Big. I now buy the PRO and it fits in your pocket much better, easier to 1 hand text.

  14. Sam

i just dont like it… i feel its just not enough anymore. it just feel boring.

  15. Glimmerz

Speck prediso case is the best case for your iphone period highly recommend

  16. Undefined

I really like the Always On Display. It's nice seeing the picture of my daughter whenever I put the phone down. My battery is usually at around 30% at the end of every day so battery drain is not an issue for me. Always nice to have options though.

Also, Airdrop still broken on iPhone 14's

  18. Landry Williams

I’m one of the few that really like Apple’s implementation of AOD. Although it would be nice for Apple to give us options, but they don’t really like doing that haha

  19. Macinboss

Damn dude, intro is on point! Nicely done – also I need a link to that Wallpaper!

  20. Tris Plays

I don’t know why everyone is hating on the always on display. It’s amazing u can see notifications unlike android.
