Steam & Cloud Gaming on a Chromebook? | Acer Chromebook 516 GE (2023) Review

Reviewing Acer’s Chromebook 516 GE 2023, a gaming Chrome OS laptop which can run Steam games, stream them using Nvidia’s GeForce Now service and more! Is it worth buying a Chromebook for Steam or cloud gaming? Well, the Acer 516 GE did a great job with the online streaming and boasts impressively premium specs for a Chrome OS laptop. However, Steam shenanigans are still very much a work in progress.

GeForce Now is certainly the way to go here. Acer’s gorgeous 120Hz 16-inch display makes the Chromebook 516 GE great for streaming games. You’ve got an anti-ghosting keyboard, respectable ports selection and WiFi 6e support. Plus this Chrome OS laptop’s battery life is good for hours of gaming online.

I’ll be monitoring the Steam situation on Chromebooks, although right now the supported models are limited and the experience is dire. I’d definitely say get a Steam Deck for portable gaming instead!

One thing you forgot to mention is that the HDMI port is 2.1 (4K 120Hz output support, so you can keep the smooth motion when working on an external monitor) and the Ethernet is 2.5GbE! Small detail, but I think it helps justify the $649 base price, as there isn't a SINGLE gaming laptop that has these two ports for under $1,599 regular price.

Also, interesting about the Geforce Now redemption failure because of being sold out of a digital access? Maybe to have more bandwidth for paying players. Anyways, if you do try it, redeem it as the free 3 months is the RTX 4080 Tier which DOES get you QHD 120Hz STREAMING. Much better than the standard 1080p60 and waiting in queue the standard one does.

Great review sir. You're right there with the top tech youtubers of the laptop space, talented, but we all knew that. Really enjoyed the video you could review water and I'd be glued to the screen.

Very good laptop, but unfortunately is too much expensive about 650 euro for the I5 processor!
This should costs not over than 450 euro for the base version!

i dont't understand why people dont want gaming latop to look like gaming laptop.. What the issue with having a gaming laptop in a cafe.. is it shameful ?. The tech review industry did the same thing with phones and now every phone is a glass sandwhich and looks the same and now they complain it looks same. The same thing will happne to laptop industry where every laptop will be a black or grey aluminum slab. I remeber when there were crazy nokia and samsung phones which all looks different . Maybe a controversial opinion

I've been giving Xbox cloud gaming a go this month. Really impressed with how well it works through my very non-gaming laptop. Only issue is they need to put more games on the service.

It'd make a lot more sense for these types of devices to go for a middling dGPU/CPU combo with less RAM (there is no real need for 16GB on a chromebook). These CPU options are great for a Windows device but I'd imagine the cost could be the same or be made cheaper with something lower end.
