I didn't know anything about chipsets, but I noticed a huge difference in the computer I bought in 2004 and my current computer which was manufactured in 2015.
The CPU towers are the same size but the one I have now is about 80% lighter in weight. The older computer was 32- bit single core with 525mb of SDRAM. The newer computer is 64-bit dual core with 3gb of DDR3. The newer computer has far fewer components but can handle a much larger workload probably 10 times faster. It's amazing how much these desktop computers have been simplified.
