Why Does Extra Data Cost Money? | Untangled

Have you ever gotten a phone bill and wondered why it was so high? Mobile data in the US is expensive. Companies like Verizon and AT&T charge customers overage fees for exceeding their data plan. And depending on where you live you might be paying high taxes and fees every month. Even with an unlimited plan, your speed may be throttled. Your cellphone bill helps pay for repairs, network upgrades, and administration costs. But competition is what really affects data prices. And that competition could be even harder to find in the US if Sprint and T-Mobile merge.

  3. I pay 2$ per month and get unlimited youtube, telegram, netflix, facebook, Instagram and discord (at 3G speed)

I used yo live in a poor country named venezuela, data plans are crap, but even the cheapest 4g lte plan can handle 720p streaming, come on, verizon

Here in Chile it’s really cheap, currently I pay 25 dollars and I get unlimited data in social media and music apps (Apple Music or Spotify) and 100g for everything else. The unlimited plans here are like 40 dollars too, but they are truly unlimited because someone sued all carriers and they had to make their unlimited plans truly unlimited.

Thank god, i am lived in country where it's only $1.4/month unlimited data.

Yea it's so expensive I'm watching this on 144p and still buffers from time to time

Here in Italy with an unlimited data plan you get throttled after using 550GB. Wow we’re lucky

In Norway there are 2 monopoly phone providers. Cost around 40 $€£ for 10 GB. But in the neighbor country you get unlimited data for 10 $£€ per month.

While we are getting 2 gb per day with free call at 30 dollar per year.

In India you get 2 gb data per day for 10 dollars for 3 months.

Here in India I use a 400 Gigabytes of LTE per month as I travel a lot. I do not stay home at all. Inspite of the fact that there is wifi available everywhere I would prefer to use my own LTE. So saying that Data in India is cheap because the value of things here is low is absurd. In terms of other utilities it’s justified, even groceries. But Data which is virtual should be available. Apart from the more data costs in the US, I haven’t seen any 500 Gigabytes of data plans on any carrier there. The fact that average american uses less than 30 gigs of data is highly disturbing. I cannot go without having my own internet anywhere. My plan costs me 50$ a month but I’m getting what I pay for, 500 gb data without any caps, data rollover for the next month and unlimited sharing over hotspot.

I live in Malaysia and our mobile plan prices are amazing. Years ago one of the carriers decided to offer Unlimited Data for RM35 (that's $8.75 converted to USD) per month. They immediately got bought over by the biggest telecommunications provider in the country, and amazingly they decided to keep the RM35 plan as a loss leader and make up the money by offering fibre WiFi (800Mbps up to 1Gbps) bundles with TVs landlines etc. That forced all the other brands to offer RM35 plans of their own to compete and since then it's been a race to outdo each other with the lowest price possible. Now I pay RM50 ($12.50 USD) per month to get Unlimited Data + Unlimited Hotspot + Unlimited Calls + 1000 SMS (I don't need that though because everyone uses Whatsapp here)

Because ATT, Verizon, and Tmoblie have to be able to pay the you work on there towers.

Also it's how they make there money. What did you all think they made money on the cell phones? Heck no. You want to pay less use an MVNO. If you are going to use ATT, Verizon, or Tmoblie. Well you are going to pay more because they have to put in more of the work to keep things running.
