Hands-On With Dell's Controversial CAMM Memory

Gordon looks inside of a Dell Precision 7670 workstation laptop to check out a CAMM memory module in person. In this video he also compares it to traditional SODIMM approach and explains why this might be the future of laptop memory.

Is that why timings are so loose on sodimms ? (distance between the pins of the sodimms and the cpu)

That older laptop brings back good memories of easy to upgrade/service/maintain hardware. It's not really doors, but I like those covers too. Also, everything on the lower side is a nice bonus too. I've had some horrible experiences with laptops wehere you had to remove the motherboard (and everything else) to repaste the CPU.

Camm has its merits …. But for Dell it’s a cash cow….. can’t upgrade existing memory as you need to replace all of it. Also the memory pinning module which is user changeable will be another expensive part that dell will say is an expensive part to replace due to all the gold tracers …. Probably retail for a few hundred dollars minimum going by dell pricing. For lower capacities such as 16gb and 32gb …. Camm offers nothing imo in terms of space saving …. 7-10 years down the road where 64gb is a minimum standard than Camm prove a viable option.

Proprietary standards with royalty fees. Doubt it'll take off before Compute Express Link (CXL) open standard gets here in ~ 3-5 years for consumers.

  5. First, I had a 7670 with 12950HX. It thermal throttled so badly that it performed worse than 10th gen laptops. It's like putting a 1000 HP engine in a Camry: you can't make use of it, so why bother? Second, the CAMM approach will save you about the thickness of a penny. Even Dell's own 7670's give only about 0.10" difference between "thin" and "performance" variations. There's no practical value to that difference and I doubt you can even notice it. The "thin" fad in laptops is getting silly.

Great now we will be forced to use a one time use laptop ram per laptop.
    Yay MORE EWASTE!!

what all software u run on ur keychain flash drive? do u have a video on it or can u make one. love the video i love tech and i found this video u got a new sub now 🙂

Trusting Dell for anything regarding RAM is a huge ask. They did sketchy, scummy, proprietary things for decades when it came to RAM modules. I'm not sure even Apple is worse than Dell when it comes to trying to rip you off for more memory in a system. Dell has too much of an unclean history here.

  10. Phreak

hmm…we will see who else adopts. I'll take that old laptop btw, usb 3 with a socketed proc? yes please. lol

  11. propeldragon

Dells actually working on something important?!? It’s been like 10 years since they’ve done something.

  12. pepeshopping

Wow, a “professional” that goes and plugs a USB drive (that could easily have malware as it was touched by how many other machines. How many of those machines are certified as clean?).

The proper way to do it is with a read-only usb or with a read only shared drive.

  13. deio977

pure garbage. It's not industry standard so no one will pay royalities to Dell. Dell can shove it in a side where sun does not shine.
They have garbage laptops already so why should anyone pay more for something that can be done cheaper?

  14. SimmanGodz

No need to keep saying memory or module.

Compression Attached Memory Module memory module..? Lol.

  15. Mike Stanley

But how much does a 128 GB CAMM module cost as compared to the equivalent SODIMM ?

  16. Mike Stanley

I thought my Thinkpad charger was potent at 90 Watts. Then you come along with a 240 Watt charger.

  17. McFly Garcia

My god thats awfull, hope this "thing" doesnt stick in the market. Cause i can see a future where you only allowed to used some vendor memory. I cant see the benefit of it, this just fk sucks.

  18. Randy R

All that power and speed and still needs to be run off limited lithium battery. The real future is not an x86 platform which is a lap heater. Might as well buy a Mac if you want measurable performance. And while your at it, use Linux 😅.

  19. Dan Stocks

I think the future is SOC like the Apple M1/2
Ok the upgradability is impossible, but so many speed, reliability and efficiency benefits.

  20. deeeezel

But is it dual channel? If its not it’s worthless.

  21. Silvar55x

The laptop display was too bright. Text becomes hard to read due to the white background blowing out; it was completely illegible when not zoomed in.

  22. A.J. Haverkamp

So I am at least twice as old as SO-DIMM. My design isn’t outdated….. yet.

  23. agenttexx

My work computers, Precison 3570s both have 64GB of RAM as do both of my home computers. 128GB is not far off. Our Engineering workstations routinely have 128GB of RAM.

  24. SeanFromPVD

Even with the bloat that comes with the current software on the market, I can't think of any reason you would need 128GB of RAM in a laptop. There are likely a few niche applications that might benefit from it, but besides those niche circumstances, the average user isn't going anywhere near that in their usage. I have a system in my house with 32GB of RAM and I haven't gotten close to that with anything I've done. I mainly added that much RAM because I could afford to, not because it was necessary. All of that being said, I run Linux on it mostly and that's a lot lighter on the system resources.

Storage, on the other hand, is a different story. Having a few extra terabytes is nice.

  25. Artur Oleszczuk

1:30 What a BS ! like someone who wants to steal data would crank open and steal ssd instead just taking whole laptop. Wow

  26. Thewickedjon

for some reason, the older laptop gordon busted open to " explain" the difference between sodimm & camm, is more interesting to look at than the new one?? crazy, that looks like a high end device

  27. omar abbas

I really, really hope this replaces soldered memory. This has been plaguing laptops for way too long.

  28. yoppindia

Bad for customer, proprietary connector, have to buy from dell. Throwing old one out, instead of adding to existing set of memory.
