  • Post comments:8 Comments

This is a cool little camera, the Insta360 X4. It’s probably one of the most unbeatable action cameras you can get around right now. There have been some nifty upgrades since the last version, notably the big upgrade is that you can shoot in up to 8K. We’ll delve into that shortly because there’s a lot to discuss about this camera.

Overview:
Firstly, as the name suggests, this is a pocket-sized camera that can capture 360° video in almost any scenario. One of the best ways to utilize the Insta360 in any scenario is on a selfie stick, which you can acquire from Insta360. It features a neat little trick where even though it’s attached via a selfie stick, unlike most other cameras, the selfie stick disappears when you play back the video. This is because the camera can stitch it out due to the 360° video capability.

Features:

  • Waterproof up to 33 ft (about 10 m).
  • 58% faster Wi-Fi transmission speeds than the X3.
  • USB port upgraded to USB 3 from the previous X3’s USB-C 2.
  • 2,290 mAh removable battery, chargeable through the USB-C port.
  • Up to 135 minutes of filming at 5.7K on a full charge.

Capabilities:
When it comes to using the camera, its versatility shines. It offers various modes, including:

  • Classic 360° video, now up to 8K, allowing for zooming without losing quality.
  • First-person footage, offering distinctive angles, almost resembling scenes from games like GTA.
  • 11K timelapses and a single-lens option for 4K recording at 60 frames per second.
  • Loop recording for continuous footage without filling up memory cards, suitable for applications like dash cams.
  • M mode, popular on platforms like Instagram and YouTube, where the selfie stick disappears, leaving you as the main focus of the shot.

Special Features:
One standout feature is “bullet time,” enabling Matrix-style shots by swinging the camera around your head. Additionally, the camera offers intuitive AI gestures, such as hand-raising to start recording or using voice commands for photos and recordings.

Editing and Creativity:
The Insta360 app is where creativity truly flourishes. It allows for extensive editing and creativity, including:

  • Prom mode for adding music to videos.
  • Multi-viewer mode for using multiple angles simultaneously.
  • Face and video filters for added effects.
  • Quick mode for easy clip creation.
  • AI mode, which automates video creation from longer clips, adding angles and music.

Versatility and Conclusion:
The camera’s versatility extends to its app, serving as a viewfinder, mode switcher, and recording controller. Its adaptability makes it suitable for various video workflows, and numerous creative applications have showcased its potential. Priced at $499, it’s an investment worth considering, particularly for vloggers and travel vloggers looking to elevate their content with immersive 360° videos.

Closing Remarks:
In conclusion, the Insta360 X4 is a remarkable camera with vast potential for creative expression. Its compact size belies its impressive capabilities, and it’s poised to become a staple tool for content creators seeking to push the boundaries of visual storytelling. If you’re intrigued by the possibilities of 360° video, the Insta360 X4 is definitely worth exploring.

Pauer View in Meta's AppLab is a neat way to watch Insta360 X4 videos in VR

  2. @jhilgart

Also is the image sensor bigger than the X3?

  3. @jhilgart

How is the editing via WIFI with the phone app in 8K? Is there much lag with your pixel phone? I've got an S22+ with the X2 which is quite stable, but in SNAP mode, it asks me to download the files to the phone which I don't like doing. So Im curious how it can handle 8K files?

How does it perform in low light? The x2 isn’t great.
