The Gamecube just got an all new Optical Drive Emulator, and it’s called the Flippy Drive! It’s unlike any optical drive emulator we’ve seen before because usually an ODE will replace the optical drive. In the case of the Flippy Drive, you can keep it! So you can play both your physical library of games and load them off of an SD card. Additionally instead of using Swiss, the team developed their own custom software called Cube Boot which has a User Interface with a beautiful looking aesthetic, almost like Nintnedo designed it themselves! Anyway, let’s take a look!

Seems really great, if they have the knowledge to setup network play, they should be able to set it up to access the SD card over network so you can transfer games honestly.

  2. @MrMet2087

This is incredible. How will it handle disc swapping for games like RE4 and MGS?

  3. @Punmaster9001

This would be perfect for conventions! My friend had his copy of Luigis Mansion stolen at a convention we work at. I bring a modded GameCube with a GC Loader in place of the optical drive, but I worry about the SD Card being stolen even the cheap one I only use for conventions. I use 4 Gamecubes for a 4 Swords set up (including the GC Loader GC) and having 3 of these with just the GBA launcher ISO installed, would still save me a decent amount of time with both setting them up for the show, but also restarting systems the next day.

Even if this isn't out before the next convention or 2 I go to, I will heavily consider this for future shows. It takes so much guess work out of setting up, and adds an effortless security option I don't currently have, Chefs Kiss

I figured out why Macho Nacho is one of the few channels I subscribe to – Tito, your professionalism and the clean, sharp production values of your channel are just as good as your content, and that's excellent! Thank you for making such excellent videos, I'm glad I'm a subscriber!

  5. you know, if the wii has the same optical drive as the gamecube, shouldn't these ODEs work on both, or at least be able to make one that works on both with different software

  6. @CodeIndigo

This is an absolutely amazing kit. The drive connector solution is just plain wild, though honestly I'd be slightly worried about the thickness of the ribbon causing some stretching similar to the issue with the old-school NES's cartridge connector. Nonetheless it is a truly awesome development and it'll revolutionize how future mods get done.

  7. @pres002

Amazing. Now I just need a GameCube 😅

  8. @DamienCooley

The most pressing issue I see is what you pointed out, the micro SD slot location. I am still sold on one, but I really hope they find a way to make it accessible without taking the shell apart. I don't normally keep the entire GC library on my GC Loader, never mind the need of updating Swiss and GBI for example. Outside of that, I can't wait for it because I love the idea of having my original disc reader back for physical discs.

  9. @trevsweb

Likely they have an FTP access via the esp32 to make adding games easy

  10. @seethruhead7119

Tito, does this replace swiss for loading Gameboy Interface?
Can you launch swiss from cubeboot without needing any additional mod chips/save hacks?
Can swiss once loaded, launch games stored on the flippydrive sd card?

    So many unanswered questions.

  11. omg, so amazing!

Thinking of buying a new GC because of the FOMO!

I want to see something like this on Wii, USB support is quite slow there

  12. @xero110

This looks awesome and I want one. An option for ripping games to the SD card would be grate if possible.

  13. @frogjmon

Here is a thought, could you put the iso version of swiss on your sd card like the other games and use cube boot to launch swiss if you needed some specific feature for whatever reason?

  14. @adonian

I definitely signed up for this one. I have 2 Gamecubes, would love to play all my games on actual hardware instead of emulation.

  15. @BobbyxZx

i'm immediately buying two, lol. perfect price point. i would like to hear more about that wifi, tho. i'm guessing i can float games over my network to it? very glad i put off doing a picoboot to my childhood cube. thnx tito

  16. @JacobDarabaris

So is this is preferred over SP2SPI because of the load times (like GCLoader)?

This mod is really unattractive to anyone who is still picking up games…if there was a way to interface with the SD card on there (like the aforementioned Ethernet at the end) this would be pretty definitive.

  17. @SiincereARC

This sounds good so far but I am a little scorned from the KunaiGC. I have tried installing two of them and the guides online to seem comprehensive enough for me to get mines working correctly. It's feeling a little bit like money burned.

  18. Did you notice if cutscenes load properly? I use the memory card boot up and they tend to be choppy due to the loading speed.

  19. @kazinwho

Oh this is cool as hell and affordable, too. Love it. Only downside for me is not currently being compatible with MemCard Pro GC, which hopefully changes in the future. Well, also, I guess it'd be nice if there were a way to boot a disc from the menu rather than having to hold L on boot. Not a huge deal though.

  20. @derek7808

No need to access the sd card if they implement access through wifi.
You didn’t benchmark the loading times and games that are sensitive to dvd access times ?

  21. @RevN3

WOW! Totally want several of these!

  22. @Obirux

Great work Chris & Trevor, i will definitely be following this project closely 👌

  23. @ncc1701p

For the sake of convenience i would like a microSD card extender to possibly give access so i can add games w/o taking the unit apart.

  24. @Beezerfish79

Solder free ODE? Sign me up! Here’s hoping other mods start utilizing the absolutely brilliant folding ribbon cable technique
